La doctora Martha Cecilia Rosales Hernández, quien encabeza la investigación realizada en la Escuela Superior de Medicina (ESM), señaló que el Alzheimer es una enfermedad de difícil diagnóstico porque frecuentemente se confunde con demencia senil y aunque en México no hay cifras exactas del padecimiento, se calcula que afecta entre el seis y nueve por ciento de la población mayor de 60 años.

Refirió que el compuesto multi target mejora la memoria, ya que es capaz de inhibir la enzima acetilcolinesterasa, aumenta la acetilcolina dentro de las sinapsis e incrementa la neurotransmisión.

La investigadora Politécnica explicó que el fármaco también trabaja para evitar la formación de placas seniles, al inhibir agregación de la proteína Beta-amiloide y de la enzima Beta secretasa, responsable de hidrolizar la proteína precursora de amiloide en los fragmentos que, conocidos como péptidos de BHeta-amiloide, se unen para formar las placas.

Rosales Hernández precisó que el producto desarrollado trata de impedir del mismo modo la agregación del péptido Beta–amiloide, que produce el crecimiento de las placas seniles y algunas moléculas proinflamatorias que ocasionan producción de especies reactivas de oxígeno.
