La entrega número 72 de los Globos de Oro, que entrega la Asociación de Prensa Extranjera en Hollywood fue testigo del triunfo de Boyhood como Mejor Película de Drama, siendo la gran ganadora de la noche con tres premios, siendo los otros dos el de Mejor Director (Richard Linklater) y Mejor Actriz de Reparto (Patricia Arquette).
Una de las favoritas y la que más nominaciones tuvo con siete, Birdman, de Alejandro González Iñárritu, se llevó solamente dos reconocimientos: Mejor Guión, el cual recibió el propio cineasta junto con los otros coescritores del mismo, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris y Armando Bo. Su segundo Globo de Oro, después de haber ganado en 2007 como productor de la Mejor Película ese año, Babel. Y el otro fue el de Mejor Actor en Comedia o Musical, con el esperado triunfo de Michael Keaton, por su trabajo en Birdman, quien dio el discurso más emotivo de la noche y agradeció a Iñárritu. El Globo de Oro para Mejor Película Comedia o Musical fue para El Gran Hotel Budapest.
Como Mejor Actriz de Comedia o Musical la ganadora fue Amy Adams, por Big Eyes, mientras que en Drama fue Julianne Moore, quien se llevó su tercer Globo de Oro por su trabajo en Still Alice.
El Mejor Actor en Drama fue Eddie Redmayne, quien interpreta al científico Stephen Hawking en The Theory of Everything. En las categorías de reparto, el Mejor Actor fue para J.K. Simmons por Whiplash, mientras que la Mejor Actriz fue Patricia Arquette, por Boyhood.
En la parte de televisión, ni Game of Thrones ni House of Cards ni Dowton Abbey. La ganadora a Mejor Serie Drama fue la producción de Showtime, The Affair, en una de las consideradas sorpresas de la noche y que también se llevó el de Mejor Actriz en Serie Drama para Ruth Wilson. Otra sorpresa fue el triunfo de la latina Gina Rodríguez por su trabajo en la nueva serie Jane The Virgin, superando a fuertes candidatas como Edie Falco o Julia Louis Dreyfuss, mientras que el Mejor Actor de Serie Musical o Comedia para Jeffrey Tambor, por Transparent, producida por Amazon. Kevin Spacey se llevó el premio a Mejor Actor en Serie Drama por House of Cards, su primer reconocimiento tras ocho nominaciones previas.
